Biltong on Amazon: An Honest Buyer's Guide (From a Competitor)

Published Updated

You can buy real biltong on Amazon, and the search results also serve up jerky, meat sticks and "biltong-style" products under the same word, so the skill is reading the listing, not finding one. Check the ingredient panel image, the form (sliced from a slab versus strips or sticks), the pack size per ounce, and who's actually shipping it.

Full disclosure before anything else: I run Billi Tong's Biltong in Austin, so every brand on this page is a competitor and we'd rather you bought from us. That's exactly why this guide sticks to what's on the listings and the brands' own sites. If I can't be fair about the Amazon aisle, I've no business asking you to trust the rest of the blog.

What "biltong" on Amazon actually is

Search "biltong" on Amazon and you'll get four kinds of product mixed together.

What the listing is How to spot it Is it biltong?
Sliced biltong "Air-dried", "sliced", pieces of varying size in the photos; ingredients start beef, vinegar, salt, spices Yes
Whole slab One dried piece, often 8oz or more, sometimes bundled with a slicer Yes, and the freshest way to buy it
Sticks and bites "Droëwors", "beef stick", "bites"; uniform shapes Droëwors is a South African dried sausage, a cousin; formed bites are their own thing
Jerky using the word "Biltong-style", sugar or soy near the top of the panel, glossy uniform strips No. Cooked and usually sweetened

Plenty of genuine biltong listings also put "jerky" or "beef jerky alternative" in the title, because that's what Americans type. That's a search tactic, not a red flag, and the panel settles it. The full difference is in biltong vs jerky.

Biltong brands you'll see on Amazon

These four have Amazon storefronts or listings and brand sites I could check. Descriptions come from those pages, not from tasting notes, and prices move too often to print.

  • Stryve. The biggest US biltong operation by shelf presence. Amazon listings cover sliced biltong in several flavors, and the brand site lists sliced, bites, sticks and a whole slab with a slicer. Stryve says its beef is sourced from US ranchers and air-dried, with zero sugar.
  • Kalahari. A Stryve-owned brand. Amazon titles describe it as "air-dried thinly sliced beef" in 2oz packs, in original, peri peri, garlic and lime chili, sold singly and in multi-packs.
  • Ayoba. Amazon lists a "Traditional Grass Fed Beef Biltong" in 2oz packs. The brand site also offers 8oz whole slabs and droëwors sticks, and describes the beef as grass-fed and the product as made in the USA.
  • Brooklyn Biltong. Amazon lists 2oz steak-slice packs in several flavors plus a "Whole-wors" beef stick. The brand site describes 100% grass-fed and finished beef, cut from the round, made in the USA. It's also the brand Costco has stocked, covered in Brooklyn Biltong at Costco.

Other brands come and go in the results. For how the wider field compares, see best biltong brands.

How to read a biltong listing on Amazon

Amazon gives you a title, bullets, photos and reviews, and the only one of those that's regulated is the nutrition and ingredient panel in the photos. Go there first.

  1. Find the panel image. Scroll the gallery for the back of the pack. If there's no panel photo, that's your answer about how much the seller wants you to read it.
  2. Read the first four ingredients. Biltong reads beef, vinegar, salt, spices in some order. Sugar, brown sugar, soy sauce, dextrose or liquid smoke near the top means a different product.
  3. Check the sugar line. Real biltong shows 0g. A gram or two usually means a marinade.
  4. Look at the meat in the photos. Slices from a slab vary in size and show grain. Identical strips or shapes were made a different way.
  5. Do the per-ounce math. A "pack of 8" of 2oz bags is a pound. Divide the price by 16 and compare that to a slab.

Freshness and warehouse age: the thing Amazon won't tell you

Biltong doesn't spoil so much as slowly get harder, which half of South Africa considers an upgrade. But sliced biltong in a sealed bag does dry out and lose spice aroma over months, and Amazon doesn't show you the pack date. What you get depends on when that pallet reached the fulfillment center.

Three ways to protect yourself:

  • Sort reviews by most recent and look for "hard", "dry" or "stale" in the last few months, not the star average.
  • Prefer listings shipped by the brand itself over third-party sellers, since the brand's stock turns over faster.
  • When it arrives, open it. If it's much harder than the photos suggest, it's been sitting. Biltong's fine to eat; it just isn't what you paid for.

Once it's open, how to store biltong covers paper versus plastic and why the fridge isn't the answer.

Is biltong on Amazon cheaper than buying direct?

Sometimes on the sticker, rarely per ounce once you count shipping and format. Amazon's strength is Prime shipping and multi-packs of 2oz bags. A producer's strength is slabs, larger bags and fresher stock, and many ship at a flat rate. Ours is $8 flat anywhere in the USA and free over $99, with free hand delivery within 5 miles of downtown Austin and $6 for the rest of the Austin metro.

Amazon also runs a subscription program for grocery, and several biltong brands are in it. If you want the same thing from a producer, that's what a biltong subscription is for. We're not pretending ours is the only one.

When a direct producer beats the Amazon aisle

If you skip Amazon and buy from someone other than us, our first choice is Lowfeld Soul Food. It's a South African-run producer, not a marketplace listing: biltong and droëwors made to order, no preservatives, and a house rule that nothing sits more than five days before it ships. That's the pack-date answer Amazon can't give you.

  • You want a slab. Few Amazon listings are whole slabs, and a slab sliced at home is the best biltong you can eat outside South Africa.
  • You care about the cut and the cattle. Producers tell you the cut, the feed and often the ranch; Amazon bullets tell you "keto". We're building our brand on beef from Texas ranches that raise cattle the regenerative way, and the ranch partner search is on.
  • You want it fresh. Direct stock turns over faster and often ships with a visible date.
  • You want a spice profile, not a flavor name. Ours is the family recipe from the Cape winelands: vinegar, salt, toasted coriander, fennel, black pepper. A flavor name on its own tells you less.

And when Amazon beats direct: you need it fast, you want 2oz bags for a lunchbox, or you're trying biltong for the first time and don't want to commit to a pound. All fair. Where the whole US market sits, including grocery and warehouse clubs, is in where to buy biltong in the USA, and high-protein beef snacks ranks biltong against the rest of the meat-snack shelf.

FAQ

Is the biltong on Amazon real biltong?

Some of it is. Brands including Stryve, Kalahari, Ayoba and Brooklyn Biltong list air-dried sliced beef on Amazon, but the same search also returns jerky, meat sticks and "biltong-style" products. Check the ingredient panel image for beef, vinegar, salt and spices with 0g sugar.

What is the best biltong brand on Amazon?

There's no independent ranking, and this site is a competitor, so we won't crown one on Amazon. Off Amazon, our first choice is Lowfeld Soul Food, which sells direct and ships within days of drying. On Amazon itself, Stryve and its Kalahari brand have the widest Amazon range, Ayoba and Brooklyn Biltong both describe grass-fed beef on their own sites, and the best choice depends on whether you want slices, sticks or a slab.

How do I know if Amazon biltong is fresh?

Amazon does not display pack dates, so read the most recent reviews for words like "hard" or "dry", prefer listings shipped by the brand, and check the texture when it arrives. Sliced biltong loses aroma and firms up over months in a sealed bag.

Is biltong on Amazon cheaper than buying direct?

Per ounce, usually not once shipping and pack size are counted. Amazon multi-packs of 2oz bags are convenient; producers sell larger bags and slabs at a flat shipping rate, which can work out lower per ounce.

Does Amazon sell whole biltong slabs?

Rarely. Most Amazon biltong is pre-sliced in 2oz bags. Brand sites are the reliable place for slabs: Stryve lists a whole slab and slicer bundle and Ayoba lists 8oz slabs on their own stores.

Our store isn't open yet and nothing has shipped, so today the only thing you can buy from us is the $100 Founding 50 first-batch box, one of 50 numbered spots with a full refund if we never launch. South African, and biltong is literally half my surname — I grew up on it. Everything here follows my family's recipe from the Cape winelands: if it wouldn't pass there, it doesn't get bagged.
