Is Droëwors Healthy? Protein, Fat, Sodium and the Honest Answer

Is droëwors healthy? As meat snacks go, yes: a typical American-made droëwors stick has about 90 calories, 15 to 16 g of protein, 2.5 g of fat and 0 g of sugar per ounce. The two catches are sodium, at around 350 mg per ounce, and fat, which runs far higher in traditional South African recipes.

I sell dried beef, so I am the last person who should tell you a sausage is a health food. What I can do is put real labels next to each other and let you read them. Droëwors comes out of that comparison better than most things in the snack aisle, with two honest asterisks.

Droëwors nutrition facts, per ounce

Per 1 oz (28 g) Calories Protein Fat Sugar Sodium
Ayoba droëwors (US-made) 90 16 g 2.5 g 0 g 350 mg
Traditional South African droëwors not reported about 12 g 7 to 9 g not reported not reported
Chomps Original beef stick (1.15 oz) 100 10 g not listed here 0 g 380 mg
Slim Jim Original Giant (0.97 oz) 130 6 g not listed here 1 g 460 mg

Sources: Ayoba figures from the Whole Foods listing. Traditional figures converted from a 2018 study of 20 commercial South African droëwors, which found 41 to 44 g of protein and 26 to 33 g of fat per 100 g. Chomps and Slim Jim from their current labels as listed in October 2026. Brands reformulate, so check the pack in your hand.

Is droëwors high in protein?

Yes. Drying removes water and leaves the protein behind, so an ounce of lean droëwors carries about 16 g. That is more than double the protein of a Slim Jim of the same weight and roughly 60% more than a Chomps stick.

Is droëwors high in fat?

It depends entirely on who made it. Droëwors is a sausage, and the fat is mixed in on purpose because it carries the flavour. Lean American versions land around 9% fat. The traditional butcher-counter version in South Africa is a quarter to a third fat, which is why it tastes the way it does.

Neither is wrong. They are different snacks. If you are counting, the nutrition panel will tell you which one you bought.

Is droëwors high in sodium?

This is the real asterisk. Salt is part of how droëwors is preserved, and you cannot make it without. At about 350 mg of sodium per ounce, one stick is roughly 15% of the 2,300 mg daily value on US labels. Two or three sticks in a sitting and you have eaten a meaningful share of the day's sodium before dinner.

If your doctor has you watching salt, droëwors is an occasional snack, not a daily one. The same goes for biltong, and there is a longer version of that arithmetic in how much biltong you can eat per day.

Does droëwors have sugar or carbs?

Usually none. A traditional droëwors cure is beef, fat, vinegar, salt and spice, with nothing sweet in it, and most labels show 0 g of carbohydrate and 0 g of sugar.

Usually is not always. Some producers add a sweet ingredient such as raisin juice concentrate, so do not assume every South African-style stick is sugar-free. How to read that on a label, and what zero sugar legally means, is in sugar-free meat sticks.

Is droëwors keto or carnivore friendly?

On macros, yes for both: high protein, moderate to high fat, effectively zero carbs. Keto eaters tend to like the traditional fattier style for that reason.

Strict carnivore eaters sometimes debate whether the vinegar and spices count. That is between you and your rulebook. The meat itself is just beef and fat.

Is droëwors healthier than a beef stick?

Look at the ingredient lists instead of the calorie counts. A traditional droëwors label reads something like: beef, vinegar, sea salt, coriander, pepper, cloves, in a sheep casing. Seven things, and you can picture all of them.

The Slim Jim Original label includes beef, pork, mechanically separated chicken, textured soy flour, corn syrup, dextrose and sodium nitrite. Different product, different purpose. Droëwors is only air-dried, while most American sticks are fermented or acidified and then cooked. The full comparison is in droëwors vs beef sticks. For the rest of the beef stick shelf, the six label checks are in healthy beef sticks and the brand-by-brand numbers in beef stick calories.

Is biltong healthier than droëwors?

When both are lean, they are almost identical. A 2 oz pack of Ayoba droëwors lists 180 calories and 31 g of protein. A 2 oz pack of Kalahari biltong lists 160 calories and 32 g. The difference only opens up with traditional fatty droëwors, where biltong is clearly the leaner choice. More in biltong vs droëwors and is biltong healthy.

South African, and biltong is literally half my surname — I grew up on it. Everything here follows my family's recipe from the Cape winelands: if it wouldn't pass there, it doesn't get bagged.
