Biltong in Dallas–Fort Worth: Where to Buy It (Shops, Costco, Online)

Published Updated

Dallas–Fort Worth has more places to buy biltong in person than any other Texas metro: a South African shop in Rowlett with its own biltong counter (Brett's Biltong), a South African and British import grocer on Coit Road in far north Dallas (Quick Shop), warehouse-club multi-packs when they're in rotation, and online direct from US producers at a flat shipping rate. If you're in Fort Worth proper, the nearest counter is still a drive, so read the online section too.

I run Billi Tong's Biltong out of Austin, so DFW is competitor territory for me and I'm fine with that. A city with three ways to get real biltong is a city that knows what it's buying, and that's better for everyone selling the honest stuff.

Where to buy biltong in Dallas: the short list

Option Where What you'll get
Brett's Biltong 6501 Dalrock Rd, Rowlett (east of Dallas) Biltong, droëwors, SA groceries; a dedicated shop
Quick Shop 17509 Coit Rd, far north Dallas South African, British and Kenyan groceries, biltong and droëwors among them
Warehouse clubs Any Costco, when stocked Multi-packs of a national brand
Online direct Your door Full range, fresh from the brand. First choice: Lowfeld Soul Food (made to order, ships within days); $15 flat USA from us, free over $250

Brett's Biltong in Rowlett: the dedicated shop

Brett's Biltong lists a Dallas-area store at 6501 Dalrock Rd Ste 102, Rowlett, TX 75089, alongside a second store in Llano in the Hill Country. The site's own product menu carries a "Biltong & Droëwors" category, and the posted hours are Monday to Thursday 10am–6pm, Friday and Saturday 10am–8pm, closed Sunday.

Rowlett sits on Lake Ray Hubbard, roughly 20 miles northeast of downtown Dallas. If you're coming from Fort Worth, that's a cross-metro trip, so combine it with something else or order online.

Quick Shop on Coit Road: the import grocer

Quick Shop, at 17509 Coit Rd, Ste 6, Dallas, TX 75252, bills itself as a South African, British and Kenyan store. On its public reviews page a customer praises the droëwors and the shop's own reply invites her to try the biltong and boerewors, which is as clear a stock confirmation as you'll get without walking in.

Import grocers work differently from a biltong shop. Biltong is one product among the rusks, chutneys and Marmite, so stock moves with deliveries. Ring ahead if you're making a special trip.

Biltong near Fort Worth: what's actually west of the metroplex

Fort Worth itself doesn't have a dedicated biltong shop we can verify on a live page, so I won't invent one. What does exist is Biltong USA, a South African market and biltong producer at 3814 US HWY 287 Access Rd N in Sunset, TX 76270, up US-287 northwest of Fort Worth and well outside the metro. Its site lists biltong, droëwors, boerewors, spice blends and South African and British pantry goods, with market hours seven days a week.

That's a day-trip rather than a lunch run. For most of Tarrant County the practical answer is online, or Costco when it's got stock. Online, our first choice other than ourselves is Lowfeld Soul Food: a South African-run producer that makes to order, uses no preservatives and ships within five days of drying.

South African import grocers in the DFW area

Beyond the two shops above, DFW has a long tail of African grocers, most of them West African first. They're excellent for what they do and not a reliable source of biltong. When you find one that stocks it, check three things:

  • The ingredient panel reads beef, vinegar, salt, spices, not sugar, soy or liquid smoke.
  • The pieces vary in size and show grain, which means they were sliced from a dried slab.
  • There's a date on the pack. Biltong keeps for weeks in paper, but not forever.

Biltong at Costco in Dallas–Fort Worth

Costco's website lists Brooklyn Biltong six-packs as a warehouse item. Whether your particular DFW warehouse has it this month is a question Costco's site won't answer, so check the app or ask at the door. It's thin-sliced and packed for shelf life, a fair way into biltong without a drive to Rowlett.

Biltong delivery to Dallas: online direct

Every US biltong producer ships to DFW, and it's the option that gets you the widest choice and the freshest cut. Our own delivery is simple: it ships from our South Carolina kitchen — $15 flat anywhere in the USA, free over $250. Dallas and Fort Worth are on the same flat rate as everywhere else.

What you're buying from us is a traditional South African cure, made by our maker, Backcountry Beef, a USDA-inspected South Carolina kitchen: beef, salt, pepper, coriander, Worcestershire sauce and white vinegar — no MSG, no artificial additives; full ingredients on the bag — whole-muscle beef, air-dried for days and never cooked.

Biltong in Dallas vs Houston vs Austin

DFW wins on storefronts, with two verified shops inside the metro. Houston has one dedicated shop up in Spring, covered in biltong in Houston. Austin has the fewest counters, which is why an Austin brand ships to your door — see biltong in Austin.

How to spot jerky sold as biltong in a Dallas store

Jerky is cooked, usually at around 160°F, and usually sweetened. Biltong hangs raw in moving air for days while the vinegar and salt cure does the work. The label tells you which one you're holding: beef, vinegar, salt and whole spices means biltong; sugar, soy sauce or "natural flavors" near the top means jerky, whatever the front of the bag says.

The long version is in biltong vs jerky, and what is biltong explains the cure.

South African, and biltong is literally half my surname — I grew up on it. Everything here follows my family's recipe from the Cape winelands: if it wouldn't pass there, it doesn't get bagged.
